Are you excited about Information Technology?
Are you interested in the tech community?
Are you a newbie?
And you have no idea how to start?
Then this piece is for you.
Here are a few tips to guide you on the necessary steps to take on getting started on the path of Information Technology.
Make A Commitment
The tech community is a world of innovation and creativity that requires passion because it’s not void of the ups and downs that come with every worthwhile adventure and career. To ensure steadiness its vital one starts with a penned down commitment that contains the following:
– Your reason or reasons for choosing Information Technology.
– Your goal and expectations.
– A pledge to self to stay on it until you achieve your goal.
This written commitment will always serve as an oath to yourself.
Do Your Research
After writing your commitment do a diligent inquiry and research about the tech industry. This step is very important and crucial because it will guide you in making and staying on the right decision at every point on this new path. Most times, people jump into programming once they decide to go into technology forgetting there are other aspects of tech that do not require coding. E.g UX Designer, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Digital marketing, etc. The research will involve you knowing the different services proffered in the tech industry, the opportunities available in each of these services or sectors, the trends, the needs, the costs, and the rewards.
After doing your due research and deciding on the service or sector to pursue, it’s right you draw your master plan. Someone is asking now ‘what should my master plan look like?’ Your master plan should have detailed information on the steps to take to get started, for instance, your short term goals, the cost, the tools, time frame to achieve a particular goal, the institutions to enroll in.
Get A Mentor Or Mentors
At this point mentally, you have already taken a step out of the shell and a step into the tech industry because completing your master plan means you have an authentic and achievable vision to run with on the tech career path.
A well-known trend in the tech world is the springing up of new innovations and speed in growth. This trend comes with a lot of frustration and confusion for a newbie who would find it difficult choosing which trend to grab or overwhelming trying to grab too many trends.
Diligently search, find and connect with a mentor or mentors who are experienced in your area of interest in the tech industry. Getting the necessary guide to building a solid foundation in your new career in technology by your mentor is another great reason for engaging the services of a mentor or mentors.
Reach Out To Mentors
It is usually more beneficial to officially contact your prospective mentors in order to create a more cordial relationship where you can reach out to them if the need arises. Most mentees have complained of been stuck at one time or the other because they had no cordial relationship with their mentors. Your mentor will help give you the needed focus on the most important trends needed at each stage of your new career. Without drawing from the wealth of experience of your mentor, one may end up getting frustrated out of the industry or waste precious time on unimportant things which may result in the waste of resources and slow progress in the tech industry.
I don’t think you want to pay the price of running on this path without a mentor!
Now you are set for training. It is wise to start with free tutorials online. These are sites that offer some free tutorials although most of their courses are not free you need to pay.
The training institutes listed above offer a wide range of courses you can choose from but don’t limit yourself to these lists because there are other platforms that offer free tutorials that you can take advantage of. Search them out.
Networking in this context is attending meetups, joining tech group chats or communities. Send friendship requests and following techies on social media. Don’t hesitate to share ideas or challenges online, you will always get help. It’s not beneficial to run alone on this career path.
Apply For Internship
At this point, it is very beneficial to intern with a company. Look out for internship opportunities and start applying. Internship aids fast and steady growth. To avoid confusion apply in your area of interest.
Build Your Portfolio
At this stage, you are expected to have acquired some level of skills and experience. Start building your portfolio for better opportunities. You can start by creating a LinkedIn account with a profile that details your skills and experience. Or you can create a personal website and share the links with prospective employers. Create a resume too.
