The M4A file format is not particularly well-known. It is still a very important file format, even though MP3 is still hugely popular. Far from being irrelevant, Apple’s iTunes music store a big player in digital music sharing makes use of this file format. They offer DRM-free music in M4A and AAC formats. DRM – Digital rights management tools are a set of technologies used for restricting the use of copyrighted works.
Someday, you might just find yourself in possession of an M4A file that you want to play outside iTunes or on a non-Apple device. The steps outlined herein will explain how to convert M4A files to MP3s so you can play them anywhere.
Converting M4A Files To MP3 Files Using Cloud Convert
Although there are a number of file conversion sites, Cloud Convert is quite easy to use. So to begin, head over to cloudconvert.com.
Step 1: Upload The M4A File
Simply click the Select File button and locate the file you want to convert on your computer. Alternatively, you can click the dropdown attached to the button and select a file from a URL, or from any the following cloud storage providers: Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive.
Step 2: Customize Output Settings
Once you’ve selected the file to be converted, you will be presented with a screen that shows you conversion file formats into which you can convert the file. You can choose the format to which you want to convert the file – MP3 in this case. Clicking the wrench icon opens up a modal that allows you to adjust the audio codec, the bitrate and the volume. After that, you can click the Convert button.
Cloud Convert will then convert your file into your desired file format at a bit rate ranging from 220kbps and 250kbps. The conversion shouldn’t last a lifetime. If you have a good internet connection, it should take just a few seconds, after which a download button appears. Clicking this button would download the file to your computer.
Converting M4A Files To MP3 With iTunes
Step 1: Import Files
You can also use iTunes to get do an M4A to MP3 conversion in a few easy steps. First, launch iTunes on your computer. Go to File>>Add Folder to Library. Select the folder where you have saved the M4A files and click Open to add them to iTunes.
Step 2: Change Import Preferences
To change import preferences, go to Edit >> Preferences >> Import Settings. Click on the dropdown labelled “Import Using” and select “MP3 Encoder”. Click “OK” to save the new preferences.
Step 3: Convert Files
On the left side of the iTunes window, highlight “Music” in the “Library” list. Select the album containing the M4A files. iTunes will list the songs. Then you can select each of the songs you want to convert and click the “Advanced” menu. Choosing “Create MP3 Version” would save the selected songs to the iTunes folder in your computer.
